Ghost Bikes memorialize accidents

Spokes website member mollivan_jon has just pointed the following story out to us. He writes:

In case you're not already well aware of http://www.ghostbike.org/, there is currently an interesting story and discussion going on over at Boing Boing about ghost bikes

http://www.boingboing.net/2008/04/30/ghost-bikes-memorial.html

This is where an old bike painted white is placed (locked) at the site of a serious/deadly bike accident. I was going to post it here but it looks like we regular users don't have that power (which is quite sensible).*

It is a nice follow on from the excellent London cycle awareness story Spokes highlighted recently. I'm not aware of any ghost bikes showing up around Christchurch but it does strike me as a good way of making people aware of danger spots, especially car driving people. As some boingboing users are saying, the downside to making motorists more aware of bike accidents is that it may discourage car drivers from getting on their
bikes.
