Help improve the new Christchurch cycle routes

The latest Christchurch cycling map identifies 12 "named" cycle routes. These routes are to be promoted and improved to increase participation in cycling. A map of the proposed routes is attached below.

CCC want to make these routes easy to find and use, and to identify where there are safety issues or other improvements needed on them. This involves a systematic audit of signage and other requirements along each route. They have asked Spokes to assist with this.

Route 8, "Papanui to City" (along the north railway path) was selected to test the audit process, and 3 Spokes members took part in the trial.  A considerable amount of useful information was collected about the route (see Route 8 worksheet below).

The Council want to extend the audit process to the other routes, and would like to continue to involve Spokes in this process.

Spokes members are invited to volunteer for the route audits. Each audit will require 2-3 volunteers from Spokes. You will need to be a reasonably confident rider in traffic, and have some experience of cycling conditions around Christchurch generally. While knowledge of the route can be an advantage, it is also useful to have someone along who hasn't cycled it previously. You will need to be able to set aside up to 4 hours for the audit - note also that some routes are quite long. Weekdays are preferred, but it may be possible to accommodate some audits at the weekend (Sunday).

If you want to take part check out the map first, and then the Information for participants below.  Then click on the link below for the route(s) you are interested in. Fill out your details and we will get in touch.
