Proposal for North / South CDB cycle route (public)
I think this possibly represents an opportunity to suggest a North / South cycle route around the east of the CBD out of the way of cars.
CBD cordon around Latimer Square
I noticed yesterday that the NE edge of the cordon is now open to pedestrians to walk around. I took a stroll around the section marked in green on the attached map, along Madras St from Kilmore to Hereford St, and an idea occurred to me. The cordon fence is placed on the east edge of the road, basically just on the road next to the curb. If the fence was moved in a metre or two it would make a usable cycle path. It wouldn't represent any extra danger to people on the outside of the cordon, and would have very little impact on traffic moving around the inside of the cordon (I saw none).
This would be of little value at the moment as the accessible section would only run from Kilmore to Hereford. However, if the next section of Madras is opened in the same way, e.g. from Hereford to St Asaph, there would be an opportunity for an low to no traffic cycle path from Bealey to Moorhouse (there is already a shared cycle / footpath alongside CPIT on Madras from St Asaph to Moorhouse).
So, is this idea crazy? If not, who can we approach with the suggestion? One potential dampener is if Madras St gets completely opened to traffic when the last section is made safe. But if not, it might be nice to get the seed of this idea planted before the final section is cleared.

Update re North / South
Update re North / South eastern CDB cycle route.
On Saturday the cordon was moved at last and all of Latimer Square is now open to the public. Sadly they have seen fit not to extend it beyond Hereford St, even for pedestrians/cyclists. Its nothing for them to open it to Cashel St.

Have discussed the CBD east
Have discussed the CBD east side cycle route concept with Michael Ferigo - he advises that Paul Burden is probably the most appropriate contact to put this to at CCC.

Hi Nigel
Thanks for the email. The demolition/inspection and repair work has progressed well on Madras Street/Latimer Square and the surrounding areas. As such I tasked our fencing contractor on Friday to make some boundary adjustments that you should see this week. They will help with the pedestrian traffic flow around the outside of North Eastern portion of the cordon.
Kilmore Street is the main haul route for several large demolitions about to begin nearby. It is likely to close completely once they are underway. In the meantime the configuration will remain the same as it is currently. Hope this helps.

Mal - It seems like a great idea. At the moment cycling along this side of the CBD is virtually impossible. I suggest approaching/ emailing Michael Ferigo and Paul Burden (Operations manager - he will probably flick it on to someone else).

There's pedestrian access
There's pedestrian access down to Hereford Street now. I believe from the south there is pedestrian access as far North as Tuam. So by my reckoning that's 3 blocks that are not currently passable.
