Sustainability Hub for Christchurch
I have been asked by Sustainability Otautahi Christchurch to broadcast the below message which you may wish to respond to as an individual. Please cut and paste the three questions below and send your responses to Kate Nimmo. Her email address is also below.
KeithTurner (Chairperson)
Members of Sustainable Otautahi Christchurch have identified that the
rebuild of Christchurch presents a unique opportunity to establish a
Sustainability Hub for our city. The purpose of a Sustainability Hub
would be to: "demonstrate, inspire and equip people to adopt best
sustainability practices."
We have drafted a submission for the final draft Central City Plan (http://www.ccc.govt.nz/homeliving/civildefence/chchearthquake/centralcityplan.aspx). The submission proposes and describes this hub - please find attached a copy.
We
are currently seeking to further assess the relevance of the hub to a
network of groups and individuals that is wider than the SOC
membership. Note that we wish to take a very broad approach
to sustainability and include businesses, food security, biodiversity,
artists, models for alternative economies, community/neighbourhood
facilitators and water quality/rivers. This will help us to
- guage support for the concept and decide if we should continue to pursue this option.
- determine how a hub would best support sustainability practitioners,
groups and individuals in Christchurch. We want to ground it in needs
that are immediate and real. - demonstrate to key decision and policy makers that the
Sustainability Hub has support from sustainability practitioners in
Christchurch and their communities.
appreciate it very much if you could review the document attached (2
pages only), and respond to the three simple questions below. This
should not take longer than 15 minutes. A summary of responses are
likely to be appended to the submission, including your name and your
organisation. The more responses we receive which are in favour of this
concept, the stronger our submission will be.
Do you support the concept of a Sustainability Hub for Christchurch?
How would a Sustainability Hub best support your own activities, or of the group(s) you represent?
Examples
may include - provide office space, help to manage funds, provide
expert technical advice, host demonstration projects, publicise or
coordinate key events, provide a meeting space, pilot or support new
projects, mentor community facilitators. The more practical, concrete
examples you can provide, the better! Creative thinking is also welcome.
Would you be interested in taking part in further dicussions on how to progress a Sustainability Hub?
We need your responses by noon, Sunday 29 January. Please send them to katie_nimmo [at] hotmail [dot] com.
Best wishes
Katie, John, Lou, Bill, and Matthew from Sustainable Otautahi Christchurch

Not sure if there was meant
Not sure if there was meant to be a document attached to this, but I think I get the gist of the idea.
From a Spokes perspective I think that two very useful needs for us would be a good-size place for our regular meetings and some space to store a few of our things (or CAN's).

We should send something
We should send something from a Spokes perspective too. I gather from Katie that she is interested in the answers to this question from a Spokes perspective.
I think it would be good to support it.
