Tennyson Street Cyclist Survey

In 2001, the Christchurch City Council reconstructed Tennyson Street between Colombo Street and the Heathcote River in Beckenham, including a new kind of cycling facility.  The design uses off-road cycle paths between the footpath and the kerb, with a narrower roadway than previously for motor vehicles.  The photo below shows the street layout.

ViaStrada, working on behalf of the Christchurch City Council, is keen to know what cyclists think of this facility design and whether or not this kind of facility should be repeated elsewhere in the city.  To help improve Christchurch's cycling facilities, please complete a short questionnaire on the ViaStrada website.  It should take you three minutes or less.

Please complete the survey by 22 October 2008 to go in the draw for a $50 voucher for Ground Effect gear or a year's membership of CAN, the Cycling Advocates' Network (value $30) plus a $30 donation to Spokes Canterbury. You'll need to supply your e-mail address to be included in the prize draw.

Tennyson St survey working?

Umm, how come when I go to http://viastrada.co.nz/tennyson-street I get a message at the top "You may not submit another entry at this time" and no link to actually run the survey? Needless to say, I've never actually done the survey yet!

Thanks

Thanks for alerting me to this problem, Glen. What I have found out is as follows:

  • The whole of the University shares a single IP address for their computer system.
  • If somebody else from the University has recently (I believe within the last couple of hours) submitted a survey, our system thinks that you are trying to fill out the survey for the second time (and it doesn't want you to do that).

This is somewhat undesirable, but easy to resolve. Just try again a couple of hours later and you shouldn't get blocked any longer (unless somebody else from the same network has just beaten you to it again).

Sorry for the hassle.

Tennyson Street

This is a great facility, and one we use regularly when cycling across to the hills, and down the Heathcote. In my view there is plenty of space between driveway entrances and the path so visibility is good. Although there is the potential for a passenger door to open in front of you, the spacing from parked cars is also relatively good, and I'd much rather be knocked over on a footpath than on the road! My only grizzle is that the paint is wearing off at the side street crossings, and the rather dodgy and congested approach to get to Tennyson St on Colombo St through the Beckenham shops.

I get a bit put off by the recycle crates and wheelie bins left in the middle of the cycle path - a bit of education would do the trick

Good comment

Hi Steven,

That's a valuable comment. Please make sure that you repeat this comment when you fill out the survey. I'm sure that if it's a commonly perceived problem, then Council might well be inclined to re-run the education campaign that they had for the residents. Mind you, ownership and tenancies change, so this might have to be repeated every few years anyway.
