CAN Do was succesful

The CAN Do and the Cycle Friendly Awards last weekend are over, and it was a hugely successful event. Some 56 CAN members from all around the country attended this event, supported by a few Spokes members.

This event was advertised on our website. Thanks to all of you who reponded to the request for volunteer support.

A write up on the events is available on the CAN website.

Letter from CAN Chair to CAN members...

My apologies, but I missed forwarding this when it arrived, although it seems to have been sent to all CAN members anyway. There was an attachment about the roles of volunteers, which I can't find, so email him for a copy if you want to read it.

Dear fellow CAN members,

Tennyson Street Cyclist Survey

In 2001, the Christchurch City Council reconstructed Tennyson Street between Colombo Street and the Heathcote River in Beckenham, including a new kind of cycling facility.  The design uses off-road cycle paths between the footpath and the kerb, with a narrower roadway than previously for motor vehicles.  The photo below shows the street layout.

London Freewheel

My oldest daughter is in London at the moment and when I was talking to her yesterday she told me how central Londaon was closed off for some "bike" thing on Sunday.

This sparked my interest and a bit of web investigation revealed that the event was the 2008 London Freewheel.  For this 12 Km of roads are closed off in central London for the day for just biking.  In light of our recent discussion and the event information from NYC maybe it's time we started to work on something like this too.

Good morning,
For the past 10 years I have been an occasional cycling commuter in
summer between Papanui and Rangiora. After a couple of near misses
while crossing the Waimak Bridge at peak time, I have given up on

Japanese Mothers Using Bikes to Collect Children From School & Kindergarten.

I wish we saw scenes like this outside schools and kindergartens in Christchurch. Follow this link to the YouTube website.

Nelson police keen to get pedalling (stuff.co.nz).

Here's a great new Nelson Police initiative, to get them out of the "steel cage"!

"Complete with lights and sirens, the pushbike is Nelson police's newest patrol vehicle of choice." ... "The advantages of having police on bikes included officers gaining a 'whole new empathy' for cyclists."

Denmark and Sydney in contrast - Two interesting articles.

From the New York Times, THOMAS L. FRIEDMAN writes about conservation and energy efficiency while enthusing over the dividends now being paid from Denmark's cycling strategies.
