Tennyson Street Cyclist Survey
In 2001, the Christchurch City Council reconstructed Tennyson Street between Colombo Street and the Heathcote River in Beckenham, including a new kind of cycling facility. The design uses off-road cycle paths between the footpath and the kerb, with a narrower roadway than previously for motor vehicles. The photo below shows the street layout.

I wish we saw scenes like this outside schools and kindergartens in Christchurch. Follow this link to the YouTube website.

Spokes aspirational projects for improving cycling in Christchurch
Spokes Core held a group strategy meeting in August and one of the priorities identified by participants was the need to identify specific cycling improvement projects to input into Council processes such as the LTCCP.
A list of cycling improvement projects has been developed by Spokes and sent to Council (see below). A meeting to discuss these ideas and the "aspirational projects" for active transport that have been proposed by by council staff was held at the Council on Thurs 18 September. A lot of great projects that would benefit cycling in Christchurch have been proposed by staff, but time will tell if these will get through Councils budgeting process and into the LTCCP.
The submission from Spokes (including specific projects we have identified) and accompanying maps are attached below.

From the New York Times, THOMAS L. FRIEDMAN writes about conservation and energy efficiency while enthusing over the dividends now being paid from Denmark's cycling strategies.
Help improve the new Christchurch cycle routes
The latest Christchurch cycling map identifies 12 "named" cycle routes. These routes are to be promoted and improved to increase participation in cycling. A map of the proposed routes is attached below.
CCC want to make these routes easy to find and use, and to identify where there are safety issues or other improvements needed on them. This involves a systematic audit of signage and other requirements along each route. They have asked Spokes to assist with this.
