Russley Road Four Laning (Memorial Ave/ Wairakei Rd intersections)
One of the roads of national significance (RoNS) projects. Main features are: 4 laning of Russley Road, new separated intersection with Memorial Ave (overbridge), closure of Wairakei Rd intersection.
There will be cycling "provision" along Russley Road (2.5m wide shoulder - no separate path), and through the Memorial Avenue intersection (no detail on this yet). The intersection, although signalised looks a bit daunting for walkers and cyclists.
With the proposed closure of the Wairakei Road intersection, there is an opportunity to push for a walking/ cycling underpass to give better access for these modes to the airport.
More details, and an outline plan can be found here:

A new road from the airport
A new road from the airport south side commercial area (left if you've come up Memorial) out to Avonhead Road is nearing completion. I can see this carrying the car traffic that currently parks along Avonhead to watch the airport once access off Russley is closed. It would also provide an alternative low traffic route into the airport area for cycle and pedestrian traffic if a cycle + ped underpass/overbridge where constructed at Avonhead Road when it is blocke
The new roundabout at Yaldhurst/Pound - bad geometry for cars and cyclists alike, but my advice to cyclists is to avoid the "provision" for cyclists completely - has not improved access to the airport area/MacClean's from that direction; looks like these Russley road changes won't improve matters either. Preparation work for the four-laning has already negatively impacted Avonhead park by removing the former green barrier between it and the road.
(I live in Avonhead and drive, ride and walk into the airport area.)
